RENOVATION AND MODERNISATION OF THE MATMUT STADIUM IN GERLAND

Renovating and redeveloping the work of Tony Garnier.

Almost 100 years after its initial inauguration, the famous Matmut Stadium in Gerland (Lyon) is undergoing 4 months of renovation and development work. Now the home of the LOU rugby club, the stadium will soon be ready to welcome fans for the new sports season in September.

Initiated by Olivier Ginon, the Chairman of GL events, the project highlights the Group's expertise in terms of engineering, architecture and asset management. The Matmut Stadium is the first stadium managed by GL events in partnership with a resident rugby club.

The project was a real challenge in terms of the deadlines and logistics. The construction company Eiffage is managing the development project, designed by Albert Constantin (the architect who designed the stadium’s two new stands for the World Cup in 1998), in collaboration with Claire Bertrand and Pierre-Benoît Thévenon from AIA Architectes et Ingénierie. Didier Repellin, Chief Architect for Historical Monuments at the RL & A agency, is supervising the heritage aspects of the project, since the Matmut Stadium has been listed as a historic monument since the late 1960s.

The development includes work on the West and East stands, as well as public hospitality areas (lounges and spectator boxes). While modernising and refurbishing the stadium, GL events has paid careful attention to respecting the original architectural work of Tony Garnier.  A key consideration in the refurbishment work is the comfort of the spectators. The new stands will be closer to the pitch (in the style of so-called "English stadiums") and also higher and wider. As such, they will ensure spectators have a better view. At the same time, 4 elevators will be installed to improve access to the stands.  These changes mean the stadium’s capacity will be reduced to 35,000 seats, in order to provide better services to visitors.

The original character of the Matmut Stadium will also be restored through a complete façade refurbishment (supervised by heritage architects). This includes the addition of exterior lighting and quality signage, as well as landscape work on the embankments. Inspired by the ancient stadium of Olympia, the refurbishments will restore the site’s original architectural quality. "This major venue will become an attractive, welcoming stadium for fans," says Jérôme Schmidt, the Director of Real-Estate projects at GL events.
