From 20 to 22 June 2012 the UN "Rio+20" Conference on Sustainable Development, marking the 20th anniversary of 1992 summit, will be held at two GL events venue concessions in Rio de Janeiro, Riocentro and HSBC Arena. This year's event is thus organised in the same city that inaugurated the formal definition of the concept of sustainable development. GL events Brazil is an active contributor to this anniversary event.
As an official provider for this Conference currently hosting more than one hundred heads of state, GL events Group's Brazilian subsidiary has deployed a team of 1,380 for this occasion. In partnership with Premier Events and LPR, it is responsible for providing the temporary structures for the Summit, as well as event services: bleachers, tents, furniture and decoration, signage, audio-visual, media centre, media desks, press tribune, cooling, lighting, simultaneous translation booth and translation services.
For this event devoted to sustainable development, GL events has itself invested in large-scale environmental solutions such as dredging the pond and the Camorim river bottoms at the Riocentro site. The Convention Centre, the largest in Latin America, is also equipped with a waste water treatment facility with a daily capacity of 340 m3.
Top Gourmet, the Group's catering company, is the official provider of food and beverage services for Rio+20. More than 100,000 people are expected to attend over the 11-day period of the event. The 1,000,000 cups they will use, along with the plates and cutlery, are made from corn and therefore entirely biodegradable and eco-friendly. Using its "Top Sustainable" concept for this Summit, the company is also responsible for waste sorting for the catering facilities.
During the Rio+20, 90 000 metres of recycled carpeting will be used for acoustics and flooring for Pavilions 1, 3, 4 and 5, as well as the tents installed at Riocentro. This corresponds to 10 000 PET plastic bottles that are reused instead of ending up in landfills as each metre of carpet is produced with nine PET plastic bottles.
Another priority was the use of environmentally friendly paints and canvases (Discovery-2-440 GSM canvas printed using Eco Solvent Ink and HP Latex printing technology) to produce all Rio+20 visuals, from panels, wall units, banners to signage advertising and merchandising.
Finally, all waste generated by the Rio +20 event will be recycled. To this purpose, Riocentro developed a partnership with the NGO Doe Seu Lixo to oversee the administrative management all solid waste, recyclable and non-recyclable. This includes organic, tailings and contaminated waste (such as batteries). This operation began on 28 May and will be completed by 28 June. At the end of the Conference, the NGO recuperate all material to be recycled.
